#identitty “S, are your breasts in front of your waist?” “No.” “Then keep your hand under where your breasts are, not in front of your waist.” That was my Odissi teacher to me, while I danced in our class. Me, suitably in culture shock. I was just 18. Today I see the popularity of boudoir photography and hear Bollywood actresses using phrases like ‘body-shaming’ and taking up Twitter wars against newspapers that publish headlines about their cleavages. But back then as a young woman, I knew that all my conscious life, I had been taught – through a strange kind of social osmosis – that a woman shouldn’t draw attention to her breasts. Like, never ever. Peeping bra straps must be hidden away quickly. Dupattas must cover blooming chests entirely. The more loose and unshapely the outlines of your clothes, the better. There was definitely no template for woman-who-shows-her-breast. So imagine my shock, when the women in Odissi, based on the beautiful damsels of temple sculpture, were totally okay with their breasts. Hell, they were in love with them. They had no qualms about drawing attention to them – by swaying their chests with abandon, keeping slightly cupped palms under their breasts gracefully, draping their pallus across torsos without trying to hide anything. So much for typical ‘Indian cultural heritage’ ideas that I had started out with, and ended up shattering, fortunately. While emulating the body language of these women over the years, I learnt something very quietly, instinctively, experientially as a woman: that strange pleasure of self-love. This was something no one ever taught me – not sex education, not my liberal parents, not even my lovers – that the body is a beautiful thing. It is more than just what is viewed from outside, glimpsed in a mirror, or gazed at by a man. It doesn’t owe belonging to any culture – Indian, western or martian. Like a beautiful home we inhabit, every part of it, is functional and aesthetic all at once. Its lines and curves and contours are to be admired, enjoyed, lived in, and taken care of, not to be judged. Nothing ‘haww ji’ about any of it.

#identitty “I don’t remember the first time I was shamed for being flat-chested but a searing memory from when I was 14 continues to make me want to shrink (not literally though, hehehe, as some would say, aur kitna, gayab ho jaogi!) At the outset let me declare that I do not consider myself desirable at all. I am usually surprised when another person finds me attractive almost wondering if they are lying to me. I feel incomplete, half of a person, constantly feeling that something is sorely missing from my body. So, back to the incident, at 14, I remember this one particularly guy who was apparently head over heels in love with me, calling me to tell me exactly that and later telling me – but listen, the guys in our class have jokes about you being flat chested. They even wonder if you’re a woman at all. Have you considered getting a surgery done when you’re older, you know?” I was shocked and bewildered at the earlier declaration of his love which hinged on this condition to change my body which till then, I had loved well. Suddenly, as a growing teen, I was made aware of my undesirability. A boy from a boy’s school told me that his friends (who knew me) used to sit together in a group and mocked my flat-chestedness and even pestered him but you know, unlike others, he still liked me despite of it. After that, there are numerous painful memories of men insulting me for my flat-chestedness (calling me a flatscreen, lakdi, dandi, I lost count of the objects women are compared to), me tugging my bare breasts in pokey under-wired padded bras, trying to feel complete but sighing every time I had to get them off, feeling my 15-year-old chest hurt and stifled because of them. I started feeling ashamed of my body. I yelled at my mother for having bought those bras for me only to be told that these were suggested by my sister who had gone through flat chest shaming herself and probably wanted to guard me against it. After escaping from the hellhole school in which I studied, I went to a so called feminist institution for my graduation only to make a friend who yelled ‘she is a boy’ when she saw me in my tank top.

#identitty “My breasts are not perky. There’s a natural sag in them. Maybe it runs in the family or maybe because of my fluctuating weight. Also my aerolas have bigger radius than the average. It’s not something you see in a porn movie or Bollywood screen. My breasts have given in to gravity. It’s funny to think that a submissive person like me has a pair of submissive breasts too. What better way to show that our bodies reflect our personality. Every boy who sees them has a different opinion about them. Some love the long cleavage, some are inconsiderate to the shape as long as you let them suck on it but all of them want my boobs to grow bigger. I wonder if it is ever going to be enough. When I gain weight, my breasts grow bigger but then they comment on my waist being too thick. It’s like a competition to fit in a cardboard cutout, which I deeply despise but yet aspire to. Everytime I invite a new man in my life, this competition gets more intense. It leads my fingers to continually scroll through Instagram to visualise that cardboard cutout more clearly. Maybe one day I will fit in that cutout but at what cost?” They said, “Can you draw me in a starlit sky?” Background #inspiration: #VanGogh’s The Starry Night #art #artist #artistsoninstagram #breasts #brownbodies #womensbodies #digitalart #procreate #crowdsourcedartprojects #illustration #illustrator #feminism #feminist#bodypositive #womenwhodraw #saggyboobsmatter
